"Awesome Comic Store Poised to Single- Handedly Revitalize Stagnant Economy", says local paper.

York, PA - Paula Rattansingh thought she was done holiday shopping.

Then she stopped in Ollie's Bargain Outlet in West Manchester Township Sunday for dryer sheets. Walking through the aisles, she spotted some books and other items to add to her previously purchased gifts. Her arms were loaded down before long.

"I have little odds and ends to pick up," said Rattansingh, of Springettsbury Township.

Rattansingh wasn't alone, as shoppers took to the stores for one last weekend of what has so far been a healthy holiday shopping season.

The National Retail Federation, which originally forecast a 2.3 percent increase in holiday sales over last year, recently revised its forecast to a 3.3 percent increase, citing stock market gains and "savings built up during the recession." Sales shrunk 3.9 percent in 2008 and increased 0.4 percent in 2009, the federation said.

Local retailers are seeing the difference.

The York Galleria was "really, really busy" Sunday, said Carl Beaverson, who manned the Calendar Club's stand on the mall's ground floor.

"Just packed, pretty much," Beaverson said, describing the mall's atmosphere. "People all around, all the time."

Planet X Comics in the Queensgate Towne Center in York Township, which sells comic books, games and graphic novels, saw higher sales Saturday than on Black Friday, said Tim Fling, the store's owner. The store might have to hire more staff for the last week of the holiday shopping season, Fling added.

Fling attributed his store's success to its relatively inexpensive nature, noting that customers can usually buy a couple of items for under $10.

That's good news for shoppers such as Kim Johnson of Dover Township, who was just starting her Christmas shopping Sunday.

"I'm a humbug," Johnson said as she browsed the toy department at Ollie's, looking for presents for her grandchildren. Her eyes darted among the stacks of toys and games. She laughed nervously, not sure what to buy.

"These kids have everything," she said.

Johnson resolved to get her shopping done during her days off from work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week. For consumers such as Rattansingh, that won't be an issue. She finished in early December, she said.

"I don't like the last-minute rush," Rattansingh said. "I don't like the traffic."
