The Good, the Bad, and the Caped of York County!
York, PA - Batman lined up with the Joker outside of Planet X Comics in Queensgate Shopping Center. Joining the duo was a zombie from The Walking Dead, Sherlock Holmes and about 10 others who were at the York Township comic store May 7 for a costume contest to celebrate Free Comic Book Day.
For an additional promotion, Tim Fling, owner of the store, worked with Frank Theatres to offer customers an opportunity to get a free ticket to see the first of this year's superhero feature films, "Thor." On its first weekend, the movie about the god of thunder earned over $66 million dollars, and according to Fling, this could be a sign of things to come.
"Ever since Disney bought Marvel, they have been putting out more movies about superheroes, including some of the lesser known ones," said Fling, a longtime superhero fan himself who can appreciate the appeal of the genre.
"I think it's just escapism for people who want some excitement in their lives."
After Thor, Marvel will release another "X-Men" movie Friday, and DC Entertainment brings "Green Lantern" to theaters June 17. Finishing up the summer is "Captain America," Marvel's last in a lineup of individual superhero movies leading up to their team-up movie, "The Avengers," coming out next year. This specific movie makes Fling extremely happy.
"Growing up, I loved team-up books, and to see 'The Avengers' coming to the big screen is incredible," he said.
Outside the comic shop, the Joker won the contest and let loose a maniacal laugh. For these fans of superhero movies, this summer could be the start of much more to be happy about.
